Why Transformers are some of the most important technologies we have. Nowadays, everything is powered by electricity, from the means we use to the entertainment we enjoy. It appears that everything is plugged in, powered, and connected to the mains.
Electricity is literally all around us. Hence, until it is next to our bed, sofa, or desk, we take it for granted that it comes right into our house.
We no longer realize how remarkable this infrastructure is as an infrastructure, but many of us don’t know much about the technology that keeps all of this running. Transformers are electromagnetic devices used to transmit electricity from a power plant to a plug socket.
The things we take for granted in our daily lives would not be possible without them. Our homes, for example, would have no electricity.
So we should educate ourselves about these simple little things, these ubiquitous little devices. They’re the reason we’re not living in the 1820s – or something close to it.
We have been writing about magnetism and electromagnetism in this series. This is because power transformers are based on this phenomenon. Can you recall the basics of electromagnetism? Check out our article on electromagnetism if you have not already done so.
